ADT recently confirmed that it fell victim to a cyberattack, resulting in the compromise of some customer data. The home security company revealed that the attackers accessed databases containing customer home addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers. ADT assured customers that their home security systems were not compromised during the incident, although they did not provide specific details on how they reached this conclusion.
In a brief regulatory filing, ADT stated that only a “small percentage” of customers were affected, without specifying an exact number. As of June 2024, ADT reported having six million customers.
This disclosure follows a claim made by a cybercriminal on a forum that over 30,000 customer records were stolen from ADT. However, the authenticity of these claims could not be immediately verified by TechCrunch.
Sarah Bellinger, a spokesperson for ADT, declined to comment on the cyberattack and data breach when contacted by TechCrunch. ADT is one of the largest home security companies in the United States and is currently owned by private equity firm Apollo Global Management, which also owns TechCrunch’s parent company, Yahoo.
