As the seasons change, it’s important to make sure your security system is keeping up. Charnel Hattingh, group head of communications and marketing at Fidelity ADT, suggests a few tips to ensure your home security is ready for the new season.
“Just like you do spring cleaning to freshen up your home, take the time to assess and fix the outside of your residence,” says Hattingh. “Make sure to test any outdoor electronic devices, like movement sensors or CCTV cameras, to ensure they are still working properly. Heavy rainfall could require some parts of the system to be replaced.”
Hattingh emphasizes the importance of testing your system regularly for peace of mind. “Just like your car needs regular service checks, your security system should be given a proper once-over. Your security provider may recommend new products that are more efficient than what you currently have installed.”
She also advises checking the physical layout of your property and making sure nothing could damage your security system. “Trim trees, clear plants blocking outdoor sensors, and check the tensioning of your electric fence to prevent false alarms.”
In case of adverse weather, Hattingh recommends contacting your security provider for a quick test and any necessary fixes. Stay proactive and keep your security system in top shape for peace of mind all year round.
