Thieves Targeting Homes Under Renovation in York
Police in North Yorkshire are warning homeowners about a recent trend of theft targeting homes under renovation and newly built properties. Unoccupied building sites in the Rawcliffe and Clifton areas of York have been stripped of items like copper wiring, diesel, and household appliances.
Owners of properties that are currently unoccupied are advised to make regular visits to check on security. The police emphasized the importance of maintaining home security during remodeling projects, stating that “remodeling a home can be exciting, but can create lapses in home security.”
Homeowners are urged to contact the police if they notice any suspicious activity while work is being carried out. Items such as lead, brass, and paperwork that could be used for identity fraud have also been reported stolen.
To prevent further thefts, police recommend only hiring reputable contractors, considering the use of surveillance, and making surprise visits to deter thieves. For more news and updates, follow BBC Yorkshire on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Story ideas can be sent to yorkslincs.news@bbc.co.uk.
