Police in York have issued a warning to homeowners about thieves targeting homes under renovation and newly built properties for metal and materials. North Yorkshire Police reported that unoccupied building sites in the Rawcliffe and Clifton areas have been stripped of items like copper wiring, diesel, and household appliances.
Owners of properties that are currently uninhabited are advised to make regular security checks to prevent theft. The police emphasized the importance of maintaining home security during remodeling projects, stating, “Remodeling a home can be exciting, but can create lapses in home security.”
Homeowners are urged to contact the police if they notice any suspicious activity during renovation work. Lead, brass, and paperwork that could be used for identity fraud have also been reported missing. To deter thieves, police recommend hiring reputable contractors, considering surveillance measures, and making surprise visits to the property.
