Keith Taylor, aged 80, passed away at Furness General Hospital on February 15. The tragic incident was revealed at Cockermouth Coroner’s Court. It was disclosed that Mr. Taylor had a “traumatic” fall at his residence in West Shore Park, Walney on January 29, where he became stuck behind the bathroom door.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but they determined that Mr. Taylor did not require hospitalization. However, a week later on February 7, he was admitted to the hospital due to a noticeable deformity in his left hip and a swollen area on his abdomen known as a haematoma.
A CT scan later confirmed that Mr. Taylor had suffered a lumbar fracture and an infected haematoma in his abdominal wall. Despite receiving antibiotic treatment on February 14, his condition worsened, leading to an agreement with his family to consider palliative care if his condition continued to decline.
Sadly, the following day, Mr. Taylor became unresponsive and passed away at 12:15 pm. The court determined that the cause of death was multi-organ failure resulting from a haematoma caused by the fall at his home.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Mr. Taylor had been dealing with severe COPD and was receiving the highest level of treatment. Additionally, he had developed Addison’s Disease, which further impacted his mobility and breathing since July.
Mr. Taylor had been happily married to his wife Norma since 1991. The court learned that he enjoyed activities such as walking, music, and dining out.
Expressing her condolences, Coroner Margaret Taylor acknowledged that Keith had lived a long and fulfilling life, enjoying his time in Walney. She expressed her regret over the circumstances of his passing, stating that no one anticipated such a rapid decline in his health.
Concluding the proceedings, Ms. Taylor recorded a verdict of accidental death.
