MPs to Get Personal Bodyguards as Security Threats Rise
In the coming days, millions of pounds will be allocated for personal bodyguards for MPs, as reported by The Sun. Negotiations are underway for additional funding of up to £15 million to enhance security for those facing the highest threats, including security upgrades for their constituencies and private homes.
Following recent incidents where anti-Israel protestors mobbed Parliament, at least three MPs have been provided with close protection. Concerns over safety have prompted MPs to speak out about chaotic scenes outside Parliament.
Security Minister Tom Tugendhat and the Treasury are finalizing a package set to be unveiled this week to address these security concerns. Mr. Tugendhat assured MPs that the Home Office and Parliament are committed to doing whatever is necessary to protect members.
In a statement to the Commons, Mr. Tugendhat emphasized the importance of defending democracy and resolving disagreements through debate rather than resorting to violence. Labour Shadow Security Minister Dan Jarvis called on the government to urgently protect democracy and ensure elected officials can carry out their duties without fear.
As security measures for MPs are reviewed and updated, the UK Government maintains a rigorous and proportionate protective security system. The police are actively working to implement appropriate security measures to safeguard elected representatives.
In other news, the Commons Speaker’s decision to block a debate on a Gaza ceasefire reignited tensions with the SNP, leading to calls for his resignation from 80 MPs. The ongoing political drama also saw Labour’s admission of using tactics to buy time for Sir Keir Starmer, sparking calls for an investigation from the Tories.
