Wi-Fi has become a must-have in UK households, with millions relying on it for entertainment, work, and staying connected. But, a surprising number of broadband users in the UK are skipping basic safety measures, causing unnecessary stress over speed and downloads.
New research from Broadband Genie reveals that most Brits simply plug in their router and forget about it. This means passwords stay the same and important software updates are ignored.
According to Broadband Genie’s survey of over 3,000 UK web users, nine out of ten admitted they’ve never updated their router firmware. Many also confessed to never changing the administrator password, as reported by the Express.
This lack of security could make broadband an easy target for cybercriminals. When asked why they hadn’t changed the factory settings, most respondents said they didn’t see the need.
Another concerning statistic is the number of people who never check what devices are connected to their network. This could mean neighbors are using your broadband without permission, slowing down your connection and posing a security risk.
Broadband Genie stresses the importance of adjusting router settings for better security. Senior Security Researcher at McAfee, Oliver Devane, explains that default settings can be risky in the hands of cybercriminals.
So, if you haven’t checked your Wi-Fi recently, it’s a good idea to update your passwords and ensure your router’s software is up to date. Keeping your router on overnight is also recommended, as many ISPs release security updates during these hours.
Alex Tofts from Broadband Genie expressed concern over the findings, noting that many users are unaware of the risks associated with their routers. He suggests ISPs should make routers as secure as possible out of the box and provide clear guidance on adjusting key security settings.
