1. Avoid posting real-time location updates on social media. “Don’t let the world know your every move,” advised safety expert Rebecca Edwards.
2. Remember to lock windows and doors and arm your alarm system before leaving. “Unlocked or open windows can be easily accessed, allowing intruders a quiet and discreet way into your home,” Petrino warned.
3. Mix up your routes and times when leaving home to avoid creating a predictable routine for potential intruders.
4. Don’t leave tools and ladders out in the open, as they can attract burglars looking for easy access points.
5. Instead of leaving the porch light on all day, use timers to give the impression that someone is home.
6. Avoid letting mail and packages pile up, as it signals that the house is unattended.
7. Keep up with lawn care and snow removal to avoid signaling that the house is empty.
8. Avoid hiding spare keys under mats or flowerpots. Use smart locks or give a spare key to a trusted neighbor instead.
