Security Alert in Londonderry: IED Found
A security alert in the Barrs Lane area of Ballymagroarty, Londonderry, took place on Monday when an improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered. As a precautionary measure, several homes were evacuated during the operation.
The suspicious object was found shortly before 11:00 GMT and has been removed for forensic examination, according to PSNI Det Insp O’Flaherty.
Det Insp O’Flaherty expressed gratitude to the residents for their understanding and cooperation, as they have now returned to their homes.
During the incident, the Ballymagroarty Community Centre provided shelter for those affected, while the Farland Way Community Hub accommodated some individuals who were unable to access their homes.
Margaret Cunningham, a community worker, shared that the disruption had upset those who sought refuge at the hub, including mothers with young children who were left standing in the cold outside their homes.
The police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
