Former Extremism Tsar Expresses Bewilderment Over Home Office's Inaction on Crucial Proposals for Home Security

Former extremism tsar, Dame Sara Khan, has expressed her frustration with the Home Office’s lack of action on her proposals to combat radicalisation. She revealed that her official recommendations have been left untouched and are “sitting on a shelf gathering dust.” In light of the “unprecedented” levels of radicalisation, Dame Sara emphasized the urgent need to address the “serious gaps” in Britain’s counter-extremism infrastructure. Despite her efforts, she admitted to receiving no response from the government regarding her reports during her time at the Commission for Countering Extremism. She described this lack of engagement as “baffling” and expressed concern that the country’s counter-extremism measures are weak and poorly coordinated. Intelligence analysts have warned of an impending surge in radicalisation, making it crucial to have a robust counter-extremism infrastructure in place. Meanwhile, Robert Jenrick, the former immigration minister, has called for stronger action against extremism, particularly anti-Semitism. He suggested that universities failing to address anti-Semitism on campus should face funding withdrawals. Dame Sara’s main report, published almost two years ago, highlighted the need for significant changes in the law to combat “shocking and dangerous” extremism that currently evades prosecution. The report recommended new criminal offenses to target Islamists, far-right groups, and conspiracy theorists. It also called for legislation to outlaw the “praising and glorifying” of terrorism. The Home Office responded by stating that protecting the safety and security of the country is their top priority and that they work alongside various partners to disrupt high-harm groups involved in radicalisation.
