A man in his 60s has been taken into custody after a police officer was stabbed in the chest at a high-security prison. The officer, who was attacked at HMP Frankland in Durham, is now in stable condition after suffering critical injuries, according to Durham Police.
Detectives are investigating the incident, which took place during an interview with a remand prisoner. The officer’s family from Greater Manchester Police has been notified and is receiving support from colleagues.
Durham Police’s Detective Chief Inspector Chris Smiles expressed concern for the injured officer, stating, “Thankfully, his condition is no longer critical and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.” The Ministry of Justice also emphasized that violence in prisons is not tolerated and improving safety is a top priority.
HMP Frankland is a category A men’s prison known for housing serious criminals. Notable inmates include Damien Bendall, Wayne Couzens, and Levi Bellfield. The prison is also home to David Fuller, Ian Huntley, and Charles Taylor.
Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed concern over the incident and offered support for the injured officer. The Ministry of Justice spokesperson reiterated that violence in prisons is unacceptable and efforts are being made to enhance safety.
