
Employees at Sellafield have been asked to work on important projects using their personal computers, according to a former staff member. This revelation raises concerns about cybersecurity at Britain’s most dangerous nuclear site, especially after allegations that it was hacked by groups associated with Russia and China.
Claire Coutinho, the energy secretary, is scheduled to meet with representatives from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) following an investigation that claimed state actors had implanted sleeper malware into Sellafield’s computer network. Sellafield is Europe’s largest nuclear waste and decommissioning site.
Sources informed The Guardian that IT breaches were first detected in 2015 and accused the organization’s leaders of consistently concealing the extent of the intrusions.
There is concern that highly sensitive material related to the movement of radioactive waste may have been compromised.
