Social media is a popular platform for sharing festive pictures of Christmas decorations and presents. However, it’s important to be cautious about what you post online during this time of year, as it could potentially tip off burglars. Research has shown that there is an increased risk of theft and home burglaries during the holidays, with robberies increasing by a significant 38.11%.
Experts at ADT, a leading home security company, have shared some top tips for safely posting on social media over Christmas. Here are their recommendations:
1. Keep the gifts a secret: Avoid sharing images or videos of gifts under the tree, during the wrapping process, or being bought. This can alert burglars that there are valuable items in your home. Try to keep presents out of view while taking pictures of your tree.
2. Avoid giving strangers a tour of the house: While you may want to show off your Christmas decorations, be careful not to reveal your property layout. This could inadvertently show possible entrances and exits. Instead, focus on specific things like the Christmas tree or table layout when sharing images.
3. Avoid sharing your plans online: It can be tempting to post about your holiday plans, such as visiting family and friends. However, this can alert burglars to times when your property will be empty. To stay safe, leave location tags off your posts and save some posts until you’re back home. For extra security, consider installing smart plugs that can turn lamps on and off to give the impression that someone is home.
4. Don’t show off your doors: Be cautious when sharing images of your wreath or outdoor lights. Avoid revealing the types of locks on your doors or the materials they’re made of. Take close-up pictures and videos of your decorations to prevent thieves from gathering information about your home.
Michele Bennett, managing director at ADT UK Subscriber, emphasized the importance of taking necessary steps to protect ourselves and our homes on social media during the festive season. She advised following their tips to ensure the safety of your family this Christmas. Additionally, she suggested considering the installation of a fully integrated smart alarm system for a greater level of security. Systems with add-ons like cameras and doorbells provide an extra layer of protection, especially if you plan on going away for the holidays.
Remember, it’s essential to enjoy the holiday season while also prioritizing the safety and security of your home.
