Dozens of police officers were spotted swarming a hotel in Wales after protesters stormed the grounds. The Stradey Park Hotel, which has been designated as an asylum facility for 240 individuals, has caused controversy within the local community. Last week, motorcyclists and protesters engaged in a tense standoff with security staff. In response, security was increased and last night, a large police presence and riot vans were seen assisting guards entering the grounds. A video of the scene captured angry locals jeering as police in high-vis vests gathered outside. The video, shared on TikTok, has garnered over 250 thousand views. Amidst noisy police sirens, people can be heard shouting “fighting your own people” and sarcastically saying “well done boys.” A female officer had to ask the rowdy crowd to step aside to allow a car to pass through. The chaotic security increase occurred after the hotel owners obtained a temporary High Court injunction to limit the activities of protesters. Gryphon Leisure, the hotel’s owner, sought the injunction to prevent trespass and obstruction at the property. Judge Roger ter Haar KC granted the injunction until late January next year, stating that there was a strong chance the hotel would be unable to exercise its property rights. The judge adjourned the hotel owner’s injunction bid earlier in the week to allow individuals who had emailed him to attend court and make submissions. Furnace residents living near the hotel expressed their concerns about the impact of the protests and the potential arrival of asylum seekers. Tracey Hallett, a carer whose grandmother previously owned the hotel, stated that while most protesters were peaceful, hard-right groups had caused unrest. As a result of the protests and the hotel’s proposed new use, Hallett stopped using her nearby home for respite care.
