ADT has confirmed that it recently fell victim to a cyberattack, resulting in the compromise of some customer data. The home security company revealed that the attackers accessed databases containing customer home addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers. ADT assured customers that their home security systems were not compromised during the incident, but did not provide specific details on how they reached that conclusion. The company stated that only a “small percentage” of customers were affected, without specifying the exact number.
As of June 2024, ADT reported having six million customers. This disclosure comes shortly after a cybercriminal claimed to have stolen over 30,000 customer records from ADT. However, the authenticity of these claims could not be immediately verified by TechCrunch.
Sarah Bellinger, a spokesperson for ADT, declined to comment on the cyberattack and data breach when approached by TechCrunch. ADT is a major player in the home security industry in the United States and is currently owned by private equity firm Apollo Global Management, which also owns TechCrunch’s parent company, Yahoo.
