Heading out for the day or going on a vacation? Be sure to keep your home safe with these expert tips.
“Some actions, or lack thereof, can significantly increase the risk of a burglary by providing information or access to potential intruders,” said Gene Petrino, a retired SWAT commander and co-founder of Survival Response LLC.
Here are some things to avoid:
1. Avoid posting your real-time location on social media. “Don’t let the world know your every move,” advised Rebecca Edwards, safety expert at SafeWise.
2. Always lock windows and doors and turn on the alarm system. “Unlocked or open windows can be easily accessed, allowing intruders a quiet and discreet way into your home,” Petrino explained.
3. Change up your routine to prevent burglars from identifying your daily schedule.
4. Don’t leave tools and ladders out in the open, as they can attract burglars.
5. Instead of leaving the porch light on all day, use timers to give the impression that someone is home.
6. Avoid letting mail and packages pile up, as it signals that the house is unoccupied.
7. Neglecting lawn care and snow removal can also make your home a target for burglars.
8. Avoid hiding a key under the mat or flowerpot, as these are common spots known to burglars.
9. Mix up where you park your car to give the impression that someone is still coming and going.
Overall, make your home look secure and normal to deter burglars. “Do what you can to give burglars the impression that your home is occupied and secured,” Edwards advised.
