"Home Security Experts Reveal Crucial Christmas Safety Measures You Must Follow"

Social media may seem like the perfect platform to share pictures of your Christmas decorations and presents, but it’s important to be cautious. The festive season is a prime time for crime, and sharing too much online could tip off burglars. Research has shown that there is a significant increase in theft and home burglaries during the holidays, with robberies rising by 38.11% at this time of year.

Experts at ADT have provided some top tips for posting safely online during Christmas. Here are their suggestions:

1. Keep the gifts a secret: Avoid posting images or videos of gifts under the tree, being bought, or in the wrapping process. This can alert burglars that there will be valuable items in your home. Try to keep presents out of view while taking pictures of your tree.

2. Avoid giving strangers a tour of the house: While you may want to show off your Christmas decorations, be careful not to reveal your property layout. This could give potential burglars information about possible entrances and exits. When sharing your decor, focus on specific things like the Christmas tree or table layout rather than the entire room.

3. Avoid sharing your plans online: It can be tempting to post about visiting family and friends during the festive season, but this alerts burglars to times when your property will be empty. To stay safe, leave location tags off your posts and save some posts until you’re back home. For extra security, consider installing smart plugs that can turn lamps on and off to create the illusion that someone is home.

4. Don’t show off your doors: Be cautious when sharing images of your wreath hanging on your door or the lights outside your home. Avoid revealing the types of locks on your doors and the materials they’re made of. Take close-up pictures and videos of your decorations to prevent thieves from gathering information about your home.

Michele Bennett, managing director at ADT UK Subscriber, advises, “At Christmas, when our houses are decorated, we can feel a bit more house proud, but it is important that we take the necessary steps to protect ourselves and our homes on social media. This festive season, be cautious while posting on social media by following our tips and keep your family safe this Christmas.”

She also suggests considering installing a fully integrated smart alarm system for a greater level of security. Systems with add-ons such as cameras and doorbells provide an extra layer of protection, especially if you plan on going away for the holidays. So, stay vigilant and enjoy a safe and secure Christmas season.
